WARNING about POSTING PICTURES of YOUR CHILDREN!
“Where Children Play, Predators Prey”
Sometimes parents are more excited than their children are when it comes to back-to-school. Most parents share photos of their children’s first day of school on social media, but it’s important to know what details you should and shouldn’t include in your posts.
There are an estimated 500,000 online predators active each day, according to the Child Crime Prevention and Safety Center.
Enough is Enough is an organization dedicated to promoting child dignity in the digital world by raising public awareness about the harms of internet pornography, sexual predators, cyberbullying, sex trafficking and other dangers.
The president and CEO of EIE Donna Rice Hughes says parents don’t do it intentionally, but parents sometimes spread too much information about their children.
“One thing parents should do to keep their children safe online is to think like a predator. Where kids play, animals prey. Predators, traffickers, and child pornographers are online looking for parents to slip up and share detailed information about their child. Be mindful of what and how you post on social media at all times,” Hughes said.
Here are a few things Safe Kids San Angelo Coordinator Jamie Harden shared on what parents should NOT do when posting back to school posts on social media.
* Their age, teacher's name and school name
* Their current list of "favorite things" (this is a great way for predators to find ways to connect with them on a personal level)
* Standing in front of an address that is easily readable in a photo (especially a home address)
By keeping your child's personal information on social media to a bare minimum, you can help prevent that information from getting into the wrong hands.
